The opposite of a cameo, an intaglio is created by carving below the surface to produce an image in relief with the purpose of pressing into sealing wax.
A fantastic?intaglio ring from the Victorian (ca1880) era! This wonderful English ring is made of 15kt yellow gold and features a round bezel set bloodstone intaglio, which has a detailed family crest?carved into the center. The intaglio?shows a shield inscribed with an winged Caduceus, the symbol of the Roman god Mercury, a sword, the rod of Asclepius, the symbol of the Roman god of medicine, and two animal heads near the top. Resting atop the shield is a knights helm surrounded by greenery. The agate has a dark black or brown?color with splotches of vibrant red, creating a stark and striking?look within the yellow gold mounting. The shoulders and band of the ring are very wide, and the shank is stamped "W.S 22.8.47".?A fabulous intaglio ring, it would look wonderful worn by a man or woman and would make an incredible addition to any Victorian collection!
Measurements:?The ring has a finger size of a generous size 10.75?but could easily be resized. The bloodstone?intaglio has a diameter of slightly more?than 1/2".
Condition: The overall condition of the ring is excellent. Besides normal surface wear, there is no apparent damage to the gold setting or carved bloodstone?intaglio, which?is intact.
